Brig Gen. Richard Karemire Visits Play of Hope and Strengthens Partnership Efforts

Play of Hope Uganda recently welcomed Richard Karemire, representing the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Joint Staff for Formal Education, Sports and Culture (JS FESC), in a visit that combined engagement on the court with meaningful institutional dialogue.

During his time at the club, Brig Gen. Karemire interacted with the young athletes and joined them for a session of badminton. His presence on the court created an atmosphere of encouragement and excitement, as players had the opportunity to engage directly with a leader who values sport as a tool for development. Moments like these reinforce the idea that sport is not only about competition, but also about connection, mentorship, and shared experience.

Beyond the games, the visit carried significant strategic importance. Brig Gen. Karemire met with the Directors of Play of Hope to hold discussions aligned with the organization’s partnership with the Defence Forces Rehabilitation Vocational Centre (DFRVC). This collaboration is focused on using sport, particularly badminton, as part of the rehabilitation and reintegration process for wounded soldiers, providing both physical activity and a pathway to renewed confidence and purpose.

The continued engagement highlights a shared vision between Play of Hope and the Defence Forces one that recognizes the role of sport in healing, discipline, and long-term development. By integrating structured sports programs into rehabilitation efforts, the partnership creates opportunities that extend beyond recovery, contributing to personal growth and community inclusion.

For the young athletes at Play of Hope, the visit served as both inspiration and affirmation. It demonstrated that the values they are learning through sport — discipline, resilience, and commitment are recognized and supported at the highest levels. It also reinforced the broader impact of the organization’s work, connecting youth development with national initiatives focused on well-being and empowerment.

As Play of Hope continues to grow its partnerships, moments like this reflect a deeper purpose: building bridges between communities, institutions, and individuals through sport, and creating lasting impact both on and off the court.
